Grand Junction - Colorado Mesa earned pins in the final two matches of its dual with CSU-Pueblo on Thursday, but they were not enough to change the outcome of a 23-18 defeat.
CSU-Pueblo won the first four matches of the night, including a forfeit at 125 pounds, to take a 17-0 lead.
That start made the difference, because winning four of the remaining six matches was not enough for the Mavericks to knot the dual.
The dual could have turned in Colorado Mesa's favor in the 149 lb. match between the Mavericks' Trevor Donarski and the Thunderwolves' Nick Stahler.
Donarski, trailing by two points, scored a takedown with seconds remaining in the third period. Regulation ended with the match tied at 4-4. Colorado Mesa head coach Chuck Pipher argued furiously that Donarski should have earned an additional two points to win the match. Instead, the referee said no, and Stahler earned an extra point for riding time.
Another turning point occurred in the 174 lb. match between Colorado Mesa's Zak Slotten and CSU-Pueblo's Trevor Grant. Trailing by two points late in the match, Slotten appeared ready to score a takedown. Instead, Grant got the points, and held on for the victory.
With the match out of reach, Colorado Mesa's Jordan Passehl and Paco Retana earned first-period pins at 197 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively.
Colorado Mesa will hold senior night on Friday when it hosts #9 Adams State.
