by KREX News Room

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Colorado Mesa University baseball team hosted the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in a single nine-inning game on Friday night at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks came away with an 11-6 win over the Cowboys on a cold and windy night in Grand Junction.

CMU improves to 16-5 on the season and 10-1 in RMAC games while New Mexico Highlands falls to 14-9 and 10-3 in the RMAC.

Colorado Mesa, ranked 17th in the most recent Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Poll, fell behind 3-0 after the top half of the first inning but scored 11 unanswered runs on their way to the 11-6 win. The Mavericks pounded out 12 hits to the Cowboys six.

The Mavericks produced some big hits in the game. Kevin Mitchell, Jake Kluge and Mitch Corwin each pounded out homeruns for Colorado Mesa. Mitchell's and Kluge's homers each went off the scoreboard in right-center field.

Corwin finished the game with three hits while Mitchell and Garrett Carpenter each finished with a pair of hits.

Nolan Snell got the ball for the Mavericks and went seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. Snell allowed only a first inning single in his seven innings of work but struck out ten and walked six.

The two teams will continue the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm from Suplizio Field.
