Mavericks Fall In Home Opener On The Baseball Diamond

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-The Colorado Mesa University baseball team had their home opener this afternoon against Montana State-Billings at sunny Suplizio Field. The Mavericks allowed four runs in the top of the eighth inning and couldnt recover from the deficit. The Yellowjackets won 5-2 and improved to 2-4-1 on the season while CMU fell to 1-3 on the year.

The Mavericks got on the board first with a run in the fourth inning but the Yellowjackets answered back with a solo home run in the sixth inning.

In the eighth inning, Montana State scored four runs on four runs on two hits and one Maverick error. In the inning, Colorado Mesa walked three and hit one.

Tim Fowler led the Mavericks at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI while Nate Robertson chipped in two hits as well.

Matt Williams dominated on the mound for the second consecutive outing as a Maverick. Williams pitched seven innings and allowed one run on three hits, struck out eight and walked two. Williams didnt allow a hit until the sixth inning and got a no decision.

The four-game series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12:00pm from Suplizio Field. The teams will play a nine-inning game then a seven-inning game following the conclusion of the first game.
