Last Second Heroics Lead Palisade Boys to Victory

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Zach Shurden hit a couple big 3-pointers, and Jesus Aguirre hit a game-winning free throw, as the Palisade boy's basketball team won its league opener, 45-44, over Battle Mountain.

The Bulldogs improve to 2-2 overall with their Thursday night win at Palisade High School. The Huskies fall to 5-2, 1-1 in Western Slope League play.

Palisade was down by four with 30 seconds left, but Shurden came in clutch from beyond the arc to make it a one-point game.

Battle Mountain's Alex Banegas responded with two free throws; however, Shurden hit another three to tie the game up at 44 with 13 seconds left.

With the clock winding down, Aguirre was fouled with .2 seconds to go. The senior made one free throw to seal the deal, as the Bulldogs win in dramatic fashion.

The Lady Bulldogs also won their league opener Thursday night, 62-26 over Battle Mountain at Palisade High School.

It's Palisade's first victory of the season, improving to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the WSL. Battle Mountain falls to 1-6, 1-1 in league play.
