Gene Taylor Baseball Team to Hold Home Opener Tomorrow at Canyon View Park

by Josh Moser

Grand Junction--“It’s going to be fun,” said Gene Taylor outfielder, Tyler Gastineau. "The last memory that we had there wasn’t very good losing in the first round(Grand Junction)… but hopefully it will be pretty good and we’ll get a couple W’s."

The W’s have certainly been coming for this Gene Taylor baseball team…and that’s largely due to their head coach David Jehnke.

Jehnke is the Sports information director at Mesa State and played baseball collegiately, now he hopes to get most of the local players to that next level.

"We treat these kids like college kids and we try to play the highest level of competition," said Head Coach, David Jehnke. "They see a little bit firmer pitching… little bit different pitching and we ask them to have a better approach at the plate than they do in the high school season."

The one player that has already made it to the collegiate ranks is former Grand Junction standout Tim Gastineau. He red-shirted this last season for Mesa State’s rival, Regis. Now he gets to reunite with his brother Tyler, once again on the field.

"It’s a lot of fun," said Gene Taylor shortstop, Tim Gastineau. "I like bringing back some knowledge I got from the college level and just helping him and to get better for next year and hopefully he’ll take that and use it for his advantage."

Next year is what this summer is all about… and tomorrow they will have a chance to put another foot forward in that direction.
