Cardinal v. White Scrimmage

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The coaching trio of Charlie Alexander, Chris Freije and Eddie Lopez led the Cardinali team while Daren Hockett, Austin Boehm, Dan Burke and Trace Billet led the White team.
In the first match of the night, Mitch Wyatt defeated Chuck Lueth 5-4. Wyatt trailed 4-3 heading into the final period but received a stalling point and rode Lueth out the entire period to receive the go ahead point.
A pair of freshman squared off at 125 pounds with Cardinal's Mac Borrego and White's Jonathon Stelling. In a tightly contested match, the two tied at 1-1 and headed to overtime. Borrego scored a takedown with five seconds left on the clock to score the 3-1 win.
Another pair of freshman took on each other at 133 pounds. Salazar accrued over five minutes of riding time and picked up a 6-0 victory over Pons. Cardinal took a 6-3 lead after that match.
Sophomore Drew Schumann battled freshman Shannon Maris at 141 pounds. Schumann led 5-1 after the first period and ended up picking up a 5-2 and sending the dual back into a tie at 6-6.
NCAA National Qualifier James Martinez took on freshman Trevor Behr at 149 pounds. Martinez worked the score to a 7-1 advantage then pinned Behr at the 2:45 mark of the match. Cardinal then led 12-6.
A pair of upper classmen faced off at 157 pounds in NCAA National Qualifier Jon Gappmaier and Junior Telbe Storbeck. Gappmaier worked the match to a 4-1 lead after the first period and led 6-3 after two periods. Gappmaier picked up a 9-3 win in the end over Storbeck and cut the Cardinal lead to 12-9.
At 157 pounds, Senior Trevor Donarski faced freshman Nick Swanson. Donarski built an 8-1 lead after two periods and picked up enough points to earn a major decision 13-3 and extend the Cardinal lead to 16-9.
Cardinal's Bobby Davis faced off against freshman Jake Eggers in another bout at 157 pounds. Davis picked up an early takedown to lead 2-1 after the first period. Davis chose down and Eggers ended up putting him in a cradle. Eggers earned the pin at 3:40 and cut the Cardinal lead to 16-15.
All-American Dylan Granard took on local standout Jessie Hoffschneider at 165 pounds. The two were tied after two periods. Granard earned an escape early in the third period and was able to fend off a slew of Hoffschneider shots to pick up the 3-2 win.
Senior Jared Cass and Junior Tyler Miles squared off in another 165 pound match. Miles picked up a takedown in the first period and had a 2-1 lead heading to the second round. Miles rode Cass out in the second and headed to the third period with a 2-1 lead and over a two minute advantage heading to the third. Miles picked up a takedown in the third period and earned a 6-1 win and cut the Cardinal lead to 19-18.
Junior Zak Slotten took on Chuck Lueth at 174 pounds. For Lueth, it was his second match of the evening. The only points through two periods was an escape by Slotten to start the second period. Slotten rode Lueth out in the third to pick up a riding point and earn a 2-0 win.
A pair of Seniors highlighted the 184 pound match with All-American Nick Petersen facing off with Garrett Stowall. Petersen worked the whole match and earned a 9-0 major decision win over Stowall. That lead gave the Cardinal team a 23-21 lead.
In the final match of the evening, NCAA National Qualifier Paco Retana squared off with Junior Jake Goddard. Paco put Goddard to his back early in the match to tak a 5-1 lead after one period. Goddard went for a cradle but Retana rolld through it and put Goddard on his back. Paco picked up the fall at the 4:55 mark of the match and gave the White team a 27-23 win.
Colorado Mesa will host the CMU Duals on Friday starting at 3:00pm. Western Wyoming, Embry-Riddle, and Sierra College will compete at the CMU Duals then all teams will take part in the Colorado Open on Saturday with wrestling starting at 9:00am.
