#5 Palisade Drops Heartbreaker to #12 Wheat Ridge, 55-53

by KREX News Room

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Danny Allen hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, as #12 Wheat Ridge upset #5 Palisade 55-53 in round one of the state tournament Wednesday night.

"It was a tough one," head coach Brian Tafel said. "I feel just awful for our kids because they've had an incredible season. To lose it like that, where we had fought all the way back, we were able to take the lead again, and....their kid made a play and made a big shot to win the game."

After trailing the entire second half, Zach Shurden capped off a 5-0 run with a go-ahead three, which put the Bulldogs up by one with 49.1 seconds remaining.

In the final seconds, Stefan Hackethal missed the corner attempt, and a jump ball was called on the rebound.

Palisade was awarded possession with 2.2 seconds left, but Luke McLean threw it away on the inbound pass, which Allen intercepted and turned into the game-winning 3-pointer.

The Bulldogs finish the season at 17-6, while #12 Wheat Ridge advances to play #4 Widefield in the second round on Saturday.
