Habitat For Humanity Holds First 10K

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Many people gathered along D and 30 roads Saturday to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

More than 100 people showed up to support Habitat for Humanity's 5K and 10K walk/run along Riverfront Trail.

All of the proceeds will go to the organization and help fund homes for those in need.

Gary Williams heard about Habitat for Humanity through his son's teacher. Williams said he applied, qualified and will be getting his brand new home sometime in December. "Very excited, it will be quite a good step for us right now. We have limited space now, so we'll have a lot more space, bigger halls, a nice bathroom, things like that will be great," said Williams.

Amy Rogers, executive director of Habitat for Humanity, says it's a great cause that will allow more homes to be built. "We sell homes to homeowners at cost and at a zero interest mortgage. So, for these folks who are really in need, what we're finding is that their payments are less than their rent, and they'll have a place to call home for the rest of their lives. It's pretty exciting," said Rogers.

There are currently six homes on the property near the Riverfront Trail. Officials say once they're done building homes on the property, which is 8.5 acres, they will have created a 52-home development.
