Xcel Energy Warns Customers of New Utility Bill Scam

DENVER - Xcel energy wants to warn it's customers of a new scam involving fake utility bills.

According to energy officials, people pretending to be Xcel representatives are gaining access to customer's funds by saying the customer has an outstanding debt and is about to lose service.

In some cases, these impersonators have fake employee identification and offer to swing by the customer's residence to pick up the payment.

In other cases, they've scammed people out of money by requesting these fake bills be paid over the phone with a credit card number.

Xcel energy officials want to stress that you should never give your bank information to anyone over the phone or in person unless you can verify their authenticity.
