MESA COUNTY, Colo.- New safety classes are being offered in Mesa County and they are free to the public.

Crime Stoppers of Mesa County and the Mesa County Sheriff's Office are partnering to offer a series of safety classes that will be held the last week of each month.

The first class, held Tuesday at the Long Family Memorial Park, was women's safety, offering tips and training for women on how to improve their ability to fend off an attacker in an increasingly violent world.

"In the past, they've taught women not to fight back. We know a lot of times, and especially in abduction cases, that that doesn't always work out anymore. Our criminals have certainly changed in the way they do things and we want women to be able to respond to that appropriately," explained Chad Williams, a deputy with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

Williams says some tips for women to remember are: know what to fight for and what not to fight for, stay off your cellphone when walking to and from places, stay in groups of three or more to lower the chance of attack by 90 percent and remain confident.

The next class, coming up at the end of September, will be a parent's guide for recognizing synthetic drugs. To receive class updates head to the Crime Stoppers Facebook page.
