FRUITA, Colo.- A woman’s body was found in a Fruita canal Thursday morning and now authorities need help identifying her.

The body was found at 7:26 a.m. in a canal right behind a home on 18 Road near Wingate Drive.

The resident who found the body told NewsChannel 5 that she walked into her backyard and saw the body floating down the canal. She then jumped in and pulled it out before calling authorities.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the death, but says it is not considered suspicious.

“The circumstances surrounding finding the body around it; the condition of it and then also the coroner’s cause and manner of death will play into that a lot,” said Heather Benjamin of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of death is known but has not yet been released.

The victim has not been identified but is described as a 65-year-old woman who is 5 feet tall and around 115 pounds. She has medium length wavy gray hair that has been dyed brown and brown eyes.

Authorities say anyone with information about this victim should call 242-6707.

Look to the homeless shelter, Catholic Outreach, or one of the churches? This sounds like someone I may have seen at the soup kitchen before. Not sure how long ago cannot recall. There are many people camping along canals now that homeless camp is closed off. Think about checking with those areas for others go with photo of face or sketch and ask other homeless persons.
