Woman Sentenced to 10 Years Probation for Stealing from Charity

DENVER (AP)- A woman who pleaded guilty to taking more than $243,000 from a charity that produced firefighter calendars for a children's hospital has been sentenced to 10 years' probation.

Kirsten Hamling will also serve 90 days in jail with work release and pay restitution.

"Words cannot express how sorry I am and how badly I feel. I've also done a lot of things right. I'm a good person, I'm a good mother, I'm a good wife," explained Hamling.

"I think a lot of us would have liked to have seen her spend a little more time in jail to think about what she's done, who she's stolen from and the magnitude of the people that have been negatively affected by this," commented Barbara Brooks, a former charity worker.

Prosecutors say Hamling created Fired Up For Kids, as a nonprofit organization to raise money for the burn unit at Children's Hospital Colorado.

The group sold calendars with pictures of firefighters.

Hamling was accused of improperly using money from the group for personal expenses, including airline tickets.

I'm a good person, I'm a good mother, I'm a good wife," explained Hamling. NO you're a thief and a lair, she should have gotten 3-5 years!
