Wet Conditions Help Crews Fighting East Coal Creek Fire

by KREX News Room

GUNNISON, Colo.- Monday's cooler weather helped crews fight the East Coal Creek Fire near Gunnison.

The fire is located on National Forest System lands in the West Elk Wilderness.

The blaze is currently at 141 acres.

The East Coal Creek Fire burned into what used to be the West Elk Fire (2008), which, along with Monday's cool, wet conditions, helped reduce the fire activity.

The fire started on Friday and remained small until warmer weather and strong winds caused the fire to grow on Sunday.

One Type 2 helicopter, one Type 1 hand crew and overhead personnel are assisting with the blaze.
