Welfare Recipients Subject to Drug Test

by KREX News Room

Denver - Colorado lawmakers are considering making welfare recipients take a drug test before receiving benefits. The proposal, sponsored by Republican Representative Jerry Sonnenberg is getting its first hearing in a House committee Thursday. House Bill 1046 would require applicants of the Colorado Works Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to pay for and pass a drug test before receiving assistance.

People who passed the drug test would be reimbursed for the cost. Applicants who fail the test would be ineligible for benefits for one year.

all of you do realize it costs MORE to implement these tests than to not...? The percentage of those who receive assistance and use drugs is equal to the percentage of the general population who use drugs... something around .2%. In other words... the state would be wasting a whole lot of money just to find out that just because someone is poor doesn't mean they are on drugs.

I agree with drug testing for welfare receipents. I work and have to take them myself. I don't have anything against helping people who find themselves facing hardtimes or have to choose between rent or food. That can happen to any of us in this poor economy. I just don't want to support someones drug habit.

But but but free money to support my kids and my drug habit is easier than getting a job and responsibility.

I had to get and pass a drug test to get my job so I think to get welfare they should also get and pass a drug test. Only fair.

Of course they should be tested. I get tested annually to pay for your welfare, so why shouldnt you be tested as well.

The abusers of the system are the guilty ones objecting to these proposed and much needed tests.

I will gladly be tested, after all the members of the House get tested. My unemployment insurance checks are not free. I PAID for them with MY taxes.

sounds like a good thing to me - do drugs = no free welfare money - test every month
