‘We Can’ Program Demonstrates High Success

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- In honor of National Childhood Obesity Month, officials are hoping more families will sign up for their "We Can” program.
The program is for overweight children ages 6 to 18 and their family members.
Officials got the idea from a Washington DC program and replicated it for children here on the Western Slope, so they could start to live healthier lifestyles.
The program only started last October and they've already had 40 kids graduate, and over half of them lowered their body mass index a significant amount.
“We've seen some changes in family habits and that really what our goal is,” said Dr. Barbara Zind of the We Can program. “It’s not to lower the BMI necessarily, but it’s for families to sort of change and for families to eat healthier and for kids to eat healthier.”
Officials hold this program every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Western Colorado Pediatrics.
They start with an education session, and then have some fun exercise like kickboxing and football.
Officials encourage families to participate in at least 6 classes and if you're interested, make an appoint by calling 243-5437.
