GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A new water line replacement project will be discussed during a Grand Junction City Council meeting Wednesday night. The project is aimed at replacing aging water lines in the city.

Officials say the pipes were originally made of steel and ductile iron that lasts about 50 years. They say because the pipes are going on 49 years, the water lines are beginning to experience periodic breaks due to corrosion. "As the infrastructure gets old, we like to replace it before we have a lot of leak history or problems with it. This is pretty standard to do a project a little less than a million dollars a year," said Tim Moore, public works and planning director.

The water line construction is expected to start Aug. 27 in Grand Avenue from Second Street to Fifth Street. It will also take place at Ouray Avenue from 19th Street to 22nd Street, 20th Street from Ouray Avenue to Chipeta Avenue, Orchard Avenue from 23rd Street to 24th Street, 24th Street from Orchard Avenue to Santa Fe Drive and Bookcliff Avenue from 22nd Street to 24th Street.

Officials say the construction is expected to wrap up Dec. 7. Officials say the cost of the project is set for $809,915.
