Warm Weather Could Delay Bear Hibernation

GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo.- Despite the recent cold weather, wildlife officials say continued warmer-than-average temperatures in Colorado's mountains mean some bears are still active.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists tell the Summit Daily News that bears in the area normally begin hibernating in early October, but they are still getting reports of sightings.

Authorities say bears are typically well settled into their dens by November and do not emerge until late April.

However, without dropping temperatures and snow, they are without a cue to begin their hibernation.
