GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. On Saturday, the Mind Springs Health facility had their fifth annual 'Walk for Recovery' to bring awareness to mental illness recovery.
Officials say sometimes mental health illness is sometimes overlooked by other chronic diseases and they want to make people more aware of the health it provides.
Members at the event walked around their building and also displayed their art work to residents expressing their feelings.
Officials say that 57 million Americans deal with a mental health disorder.
“I think it’s a real celebration that recovery happens much like we have celebrations for recovery for diabetes, brain injury. We also have celebrations for breast cancer. So, this is a real celebration that recovery, it works,” said President and CEO Sharon Raggio.
Raggio said its all about taking the first step into recovery that helps the most.
She also said programs like these are one of 25 evidence-base practices that researchers say give the most impact in someone's life.
Organizers also say they plan on doing this again next year.
