Volunteers Lend A Hand For The Holidays

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Hundreds of residents received a free Thanksgiving meal Thursday at the Elks Lodge in Downtown Grand Junction with some help from many volunteers and The Salvation Army.

For the past 35 years Sibyl Marsh, volunteer coordinator with The Salvation Army, has spent her Thanksgiving holiday organizing The Salvation Army's free Thanksgiving meal.

"I've never had a Thanksgiving with my family, but that's OK, they [as she points around the room] are my family," said Marsh.

With 60 volunteers, and help from local restaurants, The Salvation Army was able to gather plenty of food. Organizers allowed residents to go back for seconds and thirds, making sure not a piece goes to waste.

"I'm lucky they were here to help me, I have no where to go. We're on the sidewalk, all of us," said Richard Sanchez, resident at Homeward Bound.

The meal gave more than 500 people a place to go and enjoy warm food, drinks, and desserts.

"It's a blessing to serve these people," said Marsh.

"They care, it's not just let's feed them and get them out. No, they're caring people," said Sanchez.

"It's great that there are organizations like this that help everybody out, I think it's wonderful," said Mark McDonald, a Grand Junction resident.

For those residents who couldn't find a ride to the Elks Lodge, they were able to catch a free ride in a limo.

A community effort was made to make sure everyone had a chance to celebrate something they're grateful for.
