Volunteer Drivers Needed to Help Seniors
KREX News Room
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Organizers from Supporting Our Seniors Program say they need to increase the number of volunteer drivers, because the rapid growths in customers have been on the rise.
Officials say the increase of clients is at an all time high. They also say the program is important for our senior community because it helps take them to the grocery store, medical appointments and to get their prescriptions.
Officials say that sometimes friends and family can't take their senior and this program provides this service for free.
"When it comes to our drivers, not only are they providing a service for the seniors getting to and from grocery shopping or doctor's appointments but also provides a level of companionship; that our senior citizens of the community might not have,” S.O.S Program Coordinator Andrew Scamilla.
To become a volunteer driver you must be at least 25-year's old and pass a background check.
Drivers do get a $0.55 reimbursement for every mile they drive.
Officials say they only have four volunteers and more than 35 seniors needing rides.
