DENVER- In honor of Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 29, the U.S. Forest Service will waive fees for all national public lands.

Recreation sites across the country will be free, and volunteers are encouraged to clean up river banks and trails on the public lands.

The forest service says last year's celebrations resulted in the building of around 1,500 miles of trails and the planting and seeding of around 100,000 trees, shrubs and other native plants.

Participants also removed around 500 tons of trash and contributed about $17 million through volunteer services to improve public lands.
