Veterans Affairs Announces $3.1 Million For Homeless Vets Assistance

DENVER- Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki visited Denver Tuesday morning to lay out his plan to end homelessness in Colorado by 2015.

Part of that plan includes $3.1 million in grant money to provide homeless veterans with temporary housing.

Although Grand Junction is not receiving any of the grant money, other programs sponsored by the VA are making their way into the Grand Valley.

"We have two programs that we are receiving monies from, and one of them is the HUD-VASH Program and the other is the SSVF, which is the social services for veterans' families, which is a financial component that a partner is able to provide for us," said Lisa Strauss, homeless program coordinator for the Grand Junction VA.

The program started up with 100 vouchers who are used to place homeless veterans in affordable housing.

Recently, the program was awarded an additional 40 vouchers because of its success.

"I had heard about the HUD-VASH program with Lisa Strauss, so I got hooked up with that. It took them very little time to get me in, and actually I live about two blocks from here," said Michael Moraen, a veteran who formerly lived at the Homeward Bound Homeless Shelter.

The VA Medical Center still has 32 of its 140 HUD-VASH vouchers available.
