Ute Water Plans for Future, Slight Pump in Prices

MESA COUNTY, Colo. Ute Water is moving forward with the largest single water purchase in its 56-year history, which will cause a slight rise in rates for customers.

The district completed a water study, which assessed future water needs based on the projected population. In order to meet the demands, the district concluded it will need 21,400 acre-feet of additional water supply.

The district has decided to purchase this water from the Ruedi Reservoir, which will roughly cost $15 million.

Joseph Burtard, public relations officer for Ute Water, said, "Ute Water is buying the water in Ruedi Reservoir for two reasons. One in order to meet our demands by 2045. And second, if we ever experience a multi-year drought similar to what we experienced in 2012 and possibly experience in 2013 it will give us an insurance policy for multi-year drought conditions."

The new water rate increases the $15 minimum to a $17 minimum. The tap increase will be effective Jan. 1, 2013 and the water rates effective Feb. 1.
