Update on Delta Man's Flesh-Eating Condition

DENVER- Family members of a Delta man battling an unknown flesh-eating condition say they are now optimistic about his recovery.

It all started when Frank Graham called his daughter last Saturday to say he wasn't feeling well.

After spending some time at St. Mary's Hospital, he was taken to University Hospital in Aurora, where doctors amputated his arm to stop the spread of the disease.

One doctor explained just how fast the bacteria can spread, and how this patient did the right things by getting medical attention as soon as he knew something was wrong.

"It can literally engulf a leg or an arm in hours. You can see the disease spread in front of your eyes. They need surgery, they need it right away," explained Gordon Lindberg, M.D.

"Once he's out of this part, which is not there yet, he'll be in ICU for up to a month and a half. After that, we'll just start the beginning of a small process to recovery," said Tabitha Lightner, Graham's daughter.

Doctors have not pinpointed what caused the disease.

The staff agreed to treat Graham even though he has no medical insurance.
