GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- United Way of Mesa County isn't just celebrating a milestone birthday this year, but also a significant donation from local employees

The group proudly announced on Tuesday that workers from 35 local companies raised $457,325 for the 2012-2013 annual drive.

With this year being the organization's 125th anniversary, their goal is to reach $1.25 million.

United Way officials say these employees, also known as "pacesetters," generally contribute an average of 40 percent of the overall campaign.

“We have an amazing group of companies that set forward and put a lot of effort,” said Karen Troester, co-chair of United Way of Mesa County. “They worked with their employers to help them to understand the significance of United Way in our community.”

This year, there are three fewer "pacesetters" than last year, but officials say the funds already raised make up for 36 percent of their goal.

They add they're in a good position to be heading into their second phase of fundraising.
