GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. On Saturday, community members had their choice of more than 60 paper mache birdhouses to bid on, raising money for Operation Interdependence (OI).

All week long the art has been on display at Shabby Chic, a local boutique in Grand Junction. On Saturday fternoon they were auctioned off at the VFW Post 1247.

OI officials say about half of the birdhouses have new homes after today's event.

Karon Carley, national president of OI, said, "We tried it a few years ago and had great success with it. Several people had said that they had forgotten that they shouldn't be put outside, so they would hang them outside under their covered patios, but the wind would still get to them, and they said it's time we need to replace them, how about another contest?"

OI is a nonprofit organization that sends care packages to troops overseas. The group sends up to 2,500 a month. It costs 70 cents per person to send a box to the troops.
