by KREX News Room
by Jordan Sherman

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Union Pacific is on the final leg of its capital improvement project in the Grand Valley.

The freight company is replacing 25,000 rail ties and spreading 13,000 tons of rock on a 27 mile stretch from Cameo to Grand Junction in hopes of increasing efficiency and improving safety.

Mark Davis, Union Pacific spokesperson, said, "What we have noticed over the years, from a grade crossing safety standpoint, is the faster the trains are able to move, the fewer crossing collisions you have."

The rail tie replacement is expected to last for the next two weeks, while crossing grade work could last a little longer.
