Unemployment Rate for Colorado Goes Down, Rate for Mesa County Goes Up

Grand Junction - Although Colorado's unemployment rate dropped slightly for December the same can't be said for Mesa County. The Colorado unemployment rate has a small drop from 8% to 7.9%. As for Mesa County's unemployment rate, it increased to 9%, but workforce officials say that it's typical for this time of year.

"A lot of that has to do with seasonal hiring. When you look at this time of year, there aren't as many construction projects going on, and we see a decrease in construction related job openings," said Suzie Miller of the Mesa County Workforce Center.

Officials say that may have also contributed to the first drop in labor force numbers that they've seen since June.

But there are indications of an upswing in the future. Officials say they have seen an increase in the demand for employees in the Grand Valley, so much so that they are holding their first career fair in three years next week on January 31, 2012, at the DoubleTree by Hilton from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Nobody believes the fraudulent figures. 17.9% and 18% is a more realistic.
