Unemployment Improves Slightly in Mesa County

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- July unemployment numbers for Colorado were released Friday and Mesa County is showing some slight improvements.

According to officials at the mesa County Workforce Center, last month revealed an unemployment rate of 9.3 percent, down from 9.5 percent. That's slightly higher than the state's unemployment rate, which went up slightly to 8.3 percent.

A workforce spokesperson says compared to last year, the numbers show we are heading in the right direction.

Suzie Miller with the Mesa County Workforce Center, said, "From our highest point when we were booming to our lowest point in the recession there was a difference of over 12,000 people unemployed. So it's pretty significant that we've gained back over 5,800."

Officials at the Workforce Center tell NewsChannel 5 that they will be hosting a hiring event in September.

A T.J Maxx store will be opening sometime in October at the Old Borders building in Grand Junction. They are looking to hire about 100 to 120 people.

The three-day hiring event will be held September 10-12 at the Workforce Center.
