U.S. House of Representatives Passes Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Thursday morning, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Violence Against Women Act, renewing a 1994 law.

When signed into law by President Obama, the act will protect women and some men against domestic abuse.

It will provide additional resources to law enforcement and prosecutors to investigate domestic abuse and prosecute those responsible.

The act will also supply funding to non-profit organizations to help victims of abuse.

The bill was passed by the U.S. Senate two weeks ago and will be signed by President Obama.

In a statement from the White House, President Obama said, "Renewing this bill is an important step towards making sure no one in America is forced to live in fear, and I look forward to signing it into law as soon as it hits my desk."
