Tourism Numbers Reveal Successful Summer

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The latest tourism report released by the Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau indicates a very successful summer, with lodging tax revenues up significantly.

The latest numbers represent up to the end of July. July showed a 4.6 percent increase.

The year-to-date number is up 5.9 percent.

The hotels in the report include those in Grand Junction's city limits.

There are also a few that have opted to be a part of the Visitors and Convention Bureau program.

NewsChannel 5 was told that several big conventions over the past few months, as well as other events, helped bring more people to stay in the Grand Valley.

Mistalynn Meyeraan, the marketing and public relations coordinator for the Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau, said, "Everybody that owns shops, that works in all the retail and restaurants, we want to thank everyone for their warm hospitality because we can do our job, but then it's transferred over to the community to really welcome all of the visitors, make them feel at home. It's that warm western hospitality we always talk about."

The Visitor's Center also saw an increase in visitors to its website, up 20 percent compared to last year.

Officials are looking forward to September because it is typically a strong month. They attribute that to events like the Wine Festival and the cooler weather.
