Tour of the Moon Brings in Big Bucks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The numbers for the Tour of the Moon cycling classic are in, and they show there was a large economic boost to the area thanks to the event.

Officials with Grand Junction Tourism and Convention Bureau say more than 1,800 people from 36 different states turned out for the event.

Officials say the numbers aren't bad considering it's the first time the Western Slope hosted the event.

"The restaurants were full, the hotels were full; it was a beautiful weekend. It was 70 degrees here and 39 degrees in Denver, so it showed off the best the Western Slope has to offer," said Barbara Bowman of the Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Tourism officials say the event brought in more than $500,000 during the weekend.

Event planners donated around an additional $9,000 to the Riverfront Project and Bicycle Colorado.

A movie screening held during the event also raised $1,600 for the Colorado National Monument Association.

Officials tell NewsChannel 5 there are ongoing discussions that may bring the Tour of the Moon back to the valley next year.

Great job, GJ! We came in for the event, from Denver, and stayed one night. Visited wineries and the park after the ride, and realized we'll need to stay for at least 2 nights next year! We raved about the event, so several friends will be joining us next year, as well!
