Tips To Keep Pets Warm and Safe This Winter

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - In lieu of the colder weather this holiday season, animal experts are offering safety tips on how to celebrate the winter months safely with your fuzzy friends.

Officials say that many pet owners do not know that despite an animals fur, they are not as comfortable in the cold as people may think.

The Roice Hurst Humane Society says a warm home is a necessity if a pet is staying outside. Also, make sure animals are adequately protected when going out in the snow. Paws can be a problem area.

"Look for red or grayish tinting of the feet. Those are signs of frostbite," explained Lea Owens, the animal care manager for Roice Hurst.

Snow salt can irritate animal paws, but paw wax should offer some protection. Also, experts advise to clean paws regularly and bundle them with booties.
