MESA COUNTY, Colo. - Mesa County Sheriff's deputies were called out to a local liquor store Tuesday afternoon after reports of a theft.

Authorities say the incident happened just before 2 p.m. at Enterprise Liquors near 29 Road and North Avenue.

An clerk working at the time told NewsChannel 5 a man came into the establishment, swiped a bucket of money on the counter and took off.

The clerk pursued the suspect, who got into the passenger side of a white van as another person drove away.

A witness in another vehicle offered to help the clerk chase down the suspect.

"We chased him down and caught him on 30 Road. I got his license plate, rolled down my window and saw them counting the money they had just stolen out of the store," explained Lori Popick, clerk at Enterprise Liquors.

The store had been collecting that money for a high school girl to go on a trip to China and is now out more than $500.

The vehicle is described as an older, white, full-sized Chevy van.

The driver of the van is described as a tall, white male in his 40’s or 50’s with a beard.

The suspect is described as a male in his 20’s with darker skin, possibly Hispanic. He was wearing a gray hooded-sweatshirt.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Mesa County authorities at 242-6707.
