GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Grand Junction city council is trying to balance next years budget by having a special budget workshop.
However, balancing the budget has not been easy because the effect of the recession is still lingering in the Grand Valley.
This is forcing city leaders to continue looking for ways to cut some programs. The city council says they have gone over hundreds of items trying to figure out what can continue and what needs to be cut from the budget.
The mayor of Grand Junction, Sam Susuras, says to fully recover the council has to remove money from programs like from the councils’ economic development fund.
The mayor says the 2014 budget is set at $134,700,00.
"We resolved some issues; we're about $3.5 million dollars short of balancing the budget. So, the seven of us had to banter around and decide what $3.5 million dollars could be cut," said Mayor Susuras.
The mayor says councilmembers will have a meeting in two weeks discussing the possible increase of some fees in the valley including, sewer, water and trash.
