TELLURIDE, Colo.- Telluride is receiving a $500,000 federal grant to help attract more airline flights to the region.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood made the announcement.

Telluride is one of 33 U.S. communities receiving a total of $13.9 million from a U.S. Department of Transportation program to help small communities with their air service needs.

Transportation officials say the grant will be used to provide an initial revenue guarantee and marketing program to recruit seasonal service.

Public and private partners will contribute $100,000 more to the program.

Many airlines want reassurance that they will generate at least a certain amount of revenue if they offer flights to small, remote communities.
