Police: 2 Attempted Robberies, 1 Person to Blame

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A GPS device helped authorities track down a Grand Junction man accused of attempting to rob two area business.

Authorities arrested 56-year-old Robert Buch of Grand Junction after linking him to the two incidents.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, Grand Junction police responded to Bank of the West located at 1211 N. Seventh St. after receiving reports of an attempted robbery.

Police say they received an initial suspect description of a white male in his late 40s with facial hair, who was wearing a gray sweatshirt. The man was heading toward Grand Junction High School.

"Because he was headed towards the high school, we put the high school on lockdown as well as nearby Tope Elementary and several day cares that are in the area," said Kate Porras with the Grand Junction Police Department.

After police conducted interviews at the bank, they received a call about another attempted robbery at the Wienerschnitzel located at 2550 North Ave.

Witnesses gave police a description matching the suspect who attempted to rob the Bank of the West earlier in the day.

Police spotted the suspect, later identified as Buch, sitting on a sidewalk on 23rd Street across from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center; they arrested him for two counts of attempted robbery.

Before his arrest, Buch was wearing a court-ordered GPS tracking device to satisfy the terms of his parole.

Police say they were able to use data collected from the device to place Buch in the area of both crime scenes during the attempted robberies.

Police say no one was injured during the robbery attempts and Buch did not escape with any money.
