DENVER - Health officials call them superbugs, a family of untreatable and sometimes deadly bacteria that is spreading throughout the U.S.

This deadly bacteria is spreading in hospitals and other health care facilities across the country.

The so-called "nightmare bacteria", officially known by the name CRE, has been found in 42 states including Colorado.

They are resistant to even the strongest antibiotics, killing half the patients whose blood is infected and then spreading on the hands of healthcare workers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for hospital staff to take aggressive action to stop the spread by using hand sanitizer and wearing proper gowns and gloves.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health, our state has had one CRE outbreak reported so far.
