GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- School District 51 students tied their shoes extra tight Wednesday morning to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Several schools within the district participated in the event, and students at Mesa View Elementary met at Orchard Mesa Market, where they embarked on their journey to school as a whole group.

“We still have a lot of 'busers,' so kids don't get to walk to school,” said Sharon Fisher, physical education teacher at Mesa View Elementary School. “It’s kind of nice for them to get a chance to walk to school at least part of the way.”

The event was an opportunity for students to learn valuable safety tips, like how to properly cross the street and avoid traffic.

“It's good to teach them to get some exercise and how to walk to school safely,” said Mike Knowles, a parent. “You know, teach them to walk on the sidewalk.”

It was the fourth time Mesa View Elementary participated in International Walk to School Day, and 150 students and 60 parents took part in the event.
