Students Learn About Town Development

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Several local students learned a rather unique skill on Friday; how to create a community.

Six city employees visited the second grade classes at Lincoln Orchard Mesa Elementary, to teach the students all about Grand Junction's history and what goes into building a town.

The students created a 3D city and learned what kind of businesses and services develop as a community grows.

“They need to have an understanding that someone is in charge and is planning out their community,” said Randee Bergen, teacher at Lincoln Orchard Mesa Elementary. “And that they are an integral part of it and keeping this community nice and making it a nice place to live.”

It was the first time the school hosted "Create a Community Day" for their second grade classes.

Teachers at the school say hands-on experiences like this allow students to take their learning comprehension to new levels.
