St. Baldrick's Fundraiser Hits Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The first ever St. Baldrick's fundraiser hit Grand Junction Saturday, and organizers say June 30 is now recognized as St. Baldrick's Day.

More than 100 people filled Naggy McGee's Irish Pub to watch and participate in shaving their heads to help support St. Baldrick's Foundation, which is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research.

Each person shaved half of his or her head, then waited for more people to donate in order for them to shave the rest.

Two women who have been involved with the fundraiser since 2007 said they were tired of having to drive to Denver to participate. They wanted to bring the event to Grand Junction. "My daughter, Robyn, said, 'Mom, we need to bring this thing to Grand Junction, bring it home,' and that's how this whole thing got started. It's just fantastic," said Harriet Karmine, co-organizer of the St. Baldrick's fundraiser. "I lost my son. I can't help him any longer, so this is how we help him, by helping others," said Karmine.

Coordinators of the event say they've raised around $14,500, not including the raffle tickets and silent auction. They say their goal is $20,000, but they expect to surpass that.

Karmine raised the most money for shaving her head: $2,000.
