Spreading Hope With a Helping Hand

MESA COUNTY, Colo. Putting presents under the tree each year can be a struggle. Since 2009 Hope of the Grand Valley has been helping families during the Christmas season, through Adopt a Family. This year they're focusing on helping working, underemployed families in our region.

Founder of Hope of the Grand Valley, Vicki McGee, said, "I was a single mom, working, trying to make it and I know what it's like. They work in banks, restaurants. We would rather let them enjoy Christmas rather than stressing. Let them save that money and pay a bill or get something they need."

However, the organization couldn't do it without help from the community.

Laurie Fenske, finance secretary at Fruita Monument High School, said, "This year I just decided we all have what we need and there are less fortunate people out there."

"I've always said Hope of the Grand Valley is here to fill in the gaps and it's taken four years to figure out what that gap is, and the gap is for our working, underemployed," McGee said.

"We're just going to go ahead and take the money that we would've spent on ourselves and spend it on somebody else," said Fenske.

Students at Fruita Monument High School have also joined the mission.

Fenske said, "Our National Honor Society, our Interact Club and our FBLA future business leaders. We have 20 applications in for adopting families for the Christmas season."

When asked why she continues the program each year, McGee said, "Well, I do it because God told me to do it. So I just do it."

While it may be tough to ask for help, there are many folks wanting to make a difference for a family this holiday season.

Over 115 families have been selected to be adopted for Christmas 2012.
