Some Gas Evacuees Able To Return Home

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Some of the Grand Junction residents displaced by Tuesday's natural gas explosion were able to return home on Thursday.

Officials say the evacuation for homes south of Mesa Avenue has been lifted. But residents of the houses facing 7th Street between Orchard and Mesa Avenues are still not allowed to move back in.

Authorities say anyone who is returning to their homes on Thursday needs to check in at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, prior to going to their residence. Xcel Energy employees will go with residents to turn on the gas and electricity, and to re-light their pilot lights.

For the next couple of weeks, officials are urging returning residents to monitor their toilets and drains, since part of the process for ventilating gas out of the sewer system may have an effect on the sewer lines in homes.

The next scheduled update for evacuees is on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The Evacuee Hotline will be staffed up until midnight on Thursday, and then staffed again on Friday starting at 6 a.m. The hotline number is (970) 549-5130.
