Snowpack Levels Give Off Warning Sign

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The most recent snow storm is being referred to by the National Weather Service as a 'champagne snow' meaning; snow that's powdery and cold with a low water content.

Officials say the snowpack levels in the mountains are 70 to 80 percent of normal and the valley is 50 to 60 percent of normal.

They say this past storm brought six to 12 inches to the mountains and one to three inches throughout the valleys.

"Every little bit helps, but we need several more strong storms with a lot of snow in the mountains to help out with the water situation," said Chris Cuoco, senior forecaster.

The NWS says March and April are some of the wettest months of the year.

However, they say it doesn't look like that will be the case this year, as their future forecast is a lot of warm and dry temperatures.
