New Bike Trail Makes Debut in Snowmass for Summer

SNOWMASS, Colo.- Snowmass Mountain lies in the heart of Colorado's ski country during the winter, but it is quickly becoming known for its lack of snow, too, due to a new installment of mountain biking trails.

The 50 miles of trails have only been there for three years, and this summer there's a new addition. "With Valhalla, it's really putting us on as a destination, so when people come out to ride the bike trails at some of the other parks, they're including Snowmass now," said David Elkan, who works in the marketing department for Snowmass.

The dictionary defines Valhalla as the hall of Odin into which the souls of heroes slain in battle and others who have died bravely are received. That may sound a little intimidating to a first time rider, but Snowmass also offers a mountain biking school for novices.

Kevin Jordan, a mountain biking teacher, says he teaches new riders the ABCs of mountain biking.

"A stands for action stance. B stands for braking and the C stands for cornering. Basically, we're going to teach you how to stand on your bike, how to stop and how to turn," said Jordan.

The school accepts anyone who wants to ride, whether they're young or old. "Anyone from ages 4 to 74 has learned how to mountain bike with us. Last year we had a 74-year-old gentleman come on down from the top of Snowmass and had a really good time. He was safe at the end and told all of his grandkids, 'See, I can do it,'" said Jordan.

The mountain is preparing to host the Master the Mass downhill biking competition. The four-stage competition will take place July 13-15.
