DENVER- The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday that more than $17 million in grants will go toward improving Colorado's transportation systems.

The Federal Transit Administration awarded $787 million nationwide to support 255 projects across 48 states. Eight of those programs are in Colorado.

According to the Denver Post, some of the projects that received grant money are based in Denver, Fort Collins and Mesa County.

Fort Collins will use the $1.06 million grant to purchase three new compressed natural gas buses.

Mesa County will spend $650,000 on two CNG buses to replace older vehicles in Grand Valley Transit's fleet of 26.

Mesa County also received a second $1.18 million grant for a new transfer facility near the Mesa Mall.

The largest grant received in Colorado, $7.98 million, will fund an estimated three-and-a-half-block renovation of the 16th Street Mall.

Having met the people in charge at GVT I think they will make the most of this opportunity to make GVT better for everyone here in Mesa county.
