Postal Service Changes Package Prices

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A local group now has to perform double the amount of work to send packages to troops, due to recent changes in postal service rates.

Operation Interdependence, is an organization that sends care packages to troops overseas once a month.

Because of recent postal changes, officials say these types of packages are now considered to be special post, instead of parcel post, which has nearly doubled the cost of shipping.

The group is now packing items into two flat-rate boxes, which they say increases the work for packaging, taping, custom forms, and trips to the post office.

"It's frustrating and it's upsetting. I've had to contact all of the commanders that we ship to and say the boxes this month are going to arrive in March instead of February because we had to repack. We did not know about this ahead of time. I was ready to put all the postage on my boxes. I had all 50 of them ready to go," said Karon Carley, president of Operation Interdependence.

Organizers say Saturday, they'll be unpacking the 50 care packages and putting the goods into smaller boxes.
