Secretary of State Launches Effort to Register Colo. Voters

DENVER- Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler is launching an effort to register more people to vote in November.

Gessler said Tuesday that about 961,000 people who are likely eligible to vote are not registered in Colorado.

Gessler said his office will be sending mailers to them and also running advertisements in English and Spanish to let them know how they can register.

Federal funds will pay for the $850,000 outreach effort.

Gessler, a Republican, has faced criticism recently for his sending letters to nearly 4,000 registered voters questioning their citizenship.

He says he plans to move forward with a rule to hold hearings to challenge voter registration when citizenship is in doubt.

The search has yet to yield evidence of a case where an illegally-registered voter cast a ballot.
