GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Department of Energy is asking for leaders across the nation to reduce their energy use, and School District 51 is answering.

The district recently announced a partnership with the Better Buildings Challenge, a nationwide initiative to reduce company energy portfolios 20 percent by 2020.

The district’s energy portfolio is currently past the 30 percent mark and is quickly approaching 40 percent. However, officials say they are setting a new goal of reaching the 50 percent mark. They plan to maintain a leadership role during this initiative.

“We have an impact in the neighborhoods,” said Eric Anderson, energy manager. “We have lots of families and want this to be a statement that everybody in our community recognizes about the district. We operate our buildings efficiently and we operate them with a proper use of district resources.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, commercial buildings and plants account for 50 percent of the nation's primary energy use.

The EPA recently recognized the school district for its overall energy performance.
