GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The School District 51 Board of Education will be making a final decision on next year's school calendar at their business meeting Tuesday night.

The board previously approved a 5-day extended calendar option, but were looking to tweak the start date, end date and break dates.

A final school calendar will be reviewed and adopted at Tuesday's meeting which will be held at the Basil T. Knight Center at 6:00 p.m.

Everyone needs to contact Colorado legislators so that Colorado can do like other states & add a contitutional amendment that public schools cannot start before the 3rd or 4th monday of August. We need to take back our schools, our traditions, our summers!!!!!!

I sadly bet Lincoln Park pool & other pools will close early then college kids will be out of summer jobs---so Lincoln Park is not upset about this??? But they chose JUCO as a time NOT to have school?????

School Board meetings are open to public/parents. Express concerns there. Chances are there are other parents, teachers, etc, that have same concerns but are afraid to speak up.

Please everyone call or email the district & let them know that this is unacceptable.....all wccc students & smart kids taking classes at CMU will NOT have those classes for the first two weeks & will have to attend them during the breaks---so unfair to the smart kids all based on the possibility that they MIGHT get funding to help slow kids during the breaks---INSANE!!!!!!!!!!! We need to elect new school board members & get these idiots OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the new calendar is asinine in multiple respects. First of all, starting so early in the summer limits students who can work to fewer days for earning money that they need to build their savings. Next, why do the students need such a long fall break in October? I don't understand why the Board would decrease the Thanksgiving break back to 3 days instead of the 5 they have had for the past several years--many families traveled great distances for Thanksgiving--now they will be taking their children out of school those other two days just to travel to see loved ones. My wife teaches and cannot miss those days--so she won't be able to visit her elderly parents out of state now! The 2 weeks for Christmas is great, but I doubt the 2 weeks at Spring Break are necessary. I'm not sure how this new calendar benefits anyone involved--can someone clarify for me?
